Former Wanderers midfielder Jay Spearing will leave Blackpool after deciding not to renew his contract.

The 31-year-old, who has spent three seasons at Bloomfield Road, scored eight goals in 120 appearances for the club.

The Seasiders’ captain said: “It’s been a privilege to play for and captain Blackpool Football Club.

“The support myself and all of the players received during my time here has been incredible.

“Last year’s homecoming match will particularly stay with me for a long time.

“I’d like to thank the supporters and the football club and wish everyone the very best going forward.”

Head coach Neil Critchley said: “Jay has been a wonderful player and captain of this football club during his time here and we are sorry to see him go.

“The club made Jay an offer to stay for the upcoming season, but Jay felt it was time to move on and we fully respect and understand his decision.”

Spearing made 173 appearances for Wanderers over five years, having initially joined from Liverpool on loan.

Dougie Freedman made him a permanent signing in August 2013 for £3million and he went on to captain the club on numerous occasions before leaving in the summer of 2017.

Spearing has also had loan spells with Leicester and Blackburn during his career.
