EOIN Doyle feels Wanderers have got the firepower to hit their promotion goal this season.

Ian Evatt’s side found out yesterday that they will open their League Two bid with a home game against Forest Green Rovers, concluding with a trip to Crawley Town next May.

By that stage the club want to have secured a quick return to League One, and one of their biggest summer signings believes the squad is shaping up perfectly.

“I do think there will be lots of goals in this team,” he told The Bolton News. “There’s a feeling we’re getting to where we want to be now. We genuinely cannot wait for the season to begin – it’s been too long.”

Doyle has been joined by another big-hitter in Nathan Delfouneso, the former Aston Villa and Blackpool striker who has also made an encouraging scoring start in pre-season.

“I think we’ll work well together,” he said. “I think I’m more running away from the ball and he’s running more towards it. I feel more comfortable when I’m stretching defences but I think Nathan likes to drop into the pockets of space and play that little bit deeper.

“He’s definitely got an eye for goal, you’ve seen that already in pre-season, and I think it’s looking very promising so far.”

Wanderers will resume their pre-season with a game against Accrington Stanley today and then most likely conclude their run of friendlies with a game against Wigan Athletic in midweek.

There had been plans to play against Blackburn Rovers at the UniBol next weekend but scheduling clashes for the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy competitions mean the match has been shelved.

Evatt called for a strong finish to the summer schedule, which began a good six weeks ago, and feels his players still need to sharpen up in some areas before the competitive action begins.

Doyle is looking forward to an opportunity to play against teams from higher divisions, which should provide a stiffer test.

“It has been a tough pre-season, they have really pushed us hard,” he said. “We haven’t got to the stage where we’re sick of it - and I have certainly had that before in my career. They have judged it right.

“The main thing has been the manager trying to implement this style of play and the football he wants from us, so it’s been a big learning curve for everyone.

“I feel like we’ve started putting things together but we need to put that all into practice now in the last couple of friendlies against opposition who, with respect, are a step up in class from the teams we have been playing.

“It will need to be that bit quicker, that bit sharper, and we’ll have to defend more than the previous games, where we have been in full control.”
