WANDERERS failed to make a winning start under Ian Evatt, slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

But which players impressed in the club's first competitive game of 2020/21?

WANDERERS (3-4-1-2)

BILLY CRELLIN…7.

Can’t argue with the two saves he made to keep Wanderers in touch in the first half. Distribution was good, decisions likewise.

RICARDO SANTOS…6.

Caught a bit flat footed for the second goal but had otherwise done well, bringing the ball out of defence and linking up with the attack.

ALEX BAPTISTE…6.

His organisational qualities were there to see and hear in an empty stadium and some of his cover work was great. Didn’t look especially happy being pulled out wide by the Bradford front men, though.

GEORGE TAFT…6.5.

Looked comfortable on the ball and didn’t waste much possession at all. Bit too much space behind him on the left for Bradford’s first, perhaps?

GETHIN JONES…6.5.

Worked hard up and down the right and was probably the most sold player in a defensive sense for Wanderers.

TOM WHITE…7.5 MOM Always looking for the ball and did as much as anyone to get Bolton back into the match after a first-half lull. Promising start for the youngster.

BRANDON COMLEY…5.5.

Disappointing after a great pre-season. Gave the ball away in a couple of dangerous areas and didn’t have the overall effect on the game we’d hoped for.

LIAM GORDON…5.5.

Like Comley, had been one of the most promising players in pre-season but didn’t quite shift himself into the right gear, here.

ANTONI SARCEVIC…6.5 Took his goal well and popped up in some dangerous areas around the penalty box. Can see him scoring plenty this season on this evidence.

EOIN DOYLE…5.

Case of trying too hard to impress, perhaps? Desperate to get things going against his former club but hardly had a sniff of goal in the areas you most want him.

NATHAN DELFOUNESO…5.5.

Couple of clever touches around the penalty box but capable of much more. Still a work in progress.

Subs: Crawford 68 (for Comley), Miller 81 (Gordon) Not used: Alexander, Delaney, Hickman, Tutte, Amoateng.
