Originally known as Salford Amateurs in the 1960s, Salford City have come a long way since then as all fans tuned in to iFollow or Sky as we took on the Ammies for the very first time.

The chances of a Friday the 13th horror show seemed high following Ian Evatt’s pre-match press conference but thankfully he had been playing mind games as he named arguably his strongest line-up of the season.

There were welcome returns for Eoin Doyle, Gethin Jones and Andrew Tutte and a surprise debut for Matt Gilks. We also welcomed back Jason Lowe and Oscar Threlkeld, albeit in the wrong colours.

The mood of the fans was visibly lifted by the team news and there was an air of excitement that we could do something on the night.

We were not disappointed. There was commitment and control from the start, which continued for the full 90 minutes.

We played as a team with all the players coaching each other, led by Gilks marshalling the defence with his booming instructions.

The first goal was a classy strike from Doyle after great work from our Captain Marvel Antoni Sarcevic.

The second was a superb volley from Salford defender Jordan Turnbull under pressure from Doyle.

We all erupted in our isolation pods as the relief kicked in that our performance had got the result it deserved.

Diwali, the Festival of Light, started this weekend and it celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and also new beginnings.

Could this be the start of our new beginnings? Could this be the time when light starts to emerge after years of darkness at Bolton Wanderers? Only time will tell but I am starting to get that feeling.

It is time to light the candles and get behind what is happening at the Unibol.

It is not going to be easy as we have a long and winding road ahead of us. We have to carry this performance level forward to Stevenage and beyond. But maybe and it is only a maybe at this stage, we are on the march with Evatt’s army.

Elsewhere, it’s good to hear former Wanderer Nicky Hunt has come through his horrific injury scare.

My best wishes go to him after his breathing reportedly stopped after he went down playing for Darlington against Boston as after all, we could do with a team of Nicky Hunts right now.
