IAN Evatt insists Wanderers still have more gears to go through in the weeks to come.

The Bolton boss saw his side make it four straight wins in all competitions with Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory at Scunthorpe.

After a tough start to life in the UniBol dugout, Evatt now prepares for Saturday’s home clash with Southend with his side within striking distance of the League Two play-off places.

It was good all-round away display against the Iron, capped by Peter Kioso scoring the only goal of the game just before the hour mark after some fine skill from Nathan Delfouneso.

Now Evatt is purring at what his side can show in the next stage of their development.

“Results matter and they change morale and help with confidence,” the Wanderers boss told The Bolton News.

“The way we work and the way we’ve trained all season, to be honest, has been very good and I know what they’ve got in the locker.

“There’s still loads more to come and that’s the exciting thing for me.

“There’s loads more improvement to come but we’re starting to see it now and we’re starting to get results regularly on a Saturday and a Tuesday night and that’s what’s important for the supporters and for us as a football club as a whole.

“We’ve lost too many games in recent history.

“This football club has been used to losing and we’re having to change that mindset and mentality now but while it’s nice to get a run of victories together we’re not getting carried away.”

After two away wins in the space of a few days, Evatt has been most impressed with his side’s endeavour as they picked up six points at Stevenage and Scunthorpe.

Now he knows his side can be even more clinical at the other end, as shown by Kioso’s match-winning strike.

“The more confident we get we’ll hurt teams even more, of course I think we can be better with the ball still and the pleasing thing for me at the moment is our counter-press and our work ethic without the ball,” said Evatt.

“When we get with the ball right we’re going to be a handful for most teams.”

More than anything though, the Whites head coach is well aware that all the recent momentum can come to an abrupt halt against Southend, despite the Shrimpers’ struggles since they came down from League One with Wanderers last season.

“It is coming, it’s not there yet, that’s important to remember,” said Evatt.

“There’s still a long way to go in the season.

“We’ve got to keep going, we’ve got to keep focused and just win the next game.

“We can’t look any further ahead than the next game and the next game is Southend and we have to try and focus on that game and win that.

“That has to be our ethos and our motto moving forwards.

“Don’t worry about what’s happened in the past, focus on the next game and give it the importance it deserves.”
