BOLTON-born Laurence Wyke is looking for a new adventure after being released by MLS side Atlanta United.

The 24-year-old has not been included on the club's 'roster' for the 2021 season having spent two seasons at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Wyke, who plays in either defence or midfield, played seven times for the Five Stripes in 2020 having stepped up from reserve team, Atlanta United 2, where he made 29 appearances the previous season, scoring three goals.

Wyke took to social media to say he was excited about what next year had in store.

"Thank you Atlanta," he said. "It’s been an unforgettable two years. It started with Atlanta United 2 and ended in many games for the first team.

"Can’t thank the club, the staff, and the fans enough for the experiences. I wish Atlanta United all the best, I am excited to see what 2021 holds for us both."

Having been released from Manchester United as a youngster, the former Canon Slade pupil earned a scholarship in America at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas - via Repton School in Derbyshire.

A move to Furman University in South Carolina followed which proved to be fruitful as he won 2017 SoCon Player of the Year along with inclusion in two consecutive All Star selections.

“Winning the award in 2017 and getting the recognition was another stepping stone for me," Wyke, who grew up in Harwood, told the Bolton News back in May. "That’s when I started thinking I could have a shot at the MLS and a real chance of going further in football.

“All of my experiences of playing in the Manchester United academy gave me the confidence to do well here in America, first with Repton and then Furman. It was a crazy spiral upwards and it’s just kept on going.”

That stepping stone came in the shape of a move to Atlanta United 2 before getting the call from first team manager Frank de Boer where Wyke made his MLS debut at Nashville, coming on at half-time in a 2-1 victory.

A first start quickly followed in 2-1 home win over Cincinnati four days later before he went on to make another five appearances in a season that was disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Of his release from the club, Atlanta United said that Wyke will be 'available through the MLS Re-Entry Process' but it remains to be seen if he will pursue a career in America.
