A FUNDRAISING page has been set up to support ex-Bolton Wanderers striker George Newell as he recovers from a horrific double compound leg fracture.

The 24-year-old, who featured briefly for the Whites in the Championship during the 2015/16 season, suffered a terrible injury playing in a friendly for Southport against Accrington Stanley earlier this month.

Formby-born Newell – son of ex-Everton and Leicester City front man Mike Newell – has also been on the books of Motherwell, Albion Rovers and AFC Fylde since leaving Wanderers in 2017.

Southport secretary James Tedford has now set up a GoFundMe page to help the player through a difficult recovery process, which at time of writing had already raised £600 towards a £2,000 target.
