WANDERERS defender Jamie Mascoll has joined Irish side Waterford on loan for the rest of the season.

The pacy 23-year-old joined Bolton on a free transfer last August after leaving Wycombe and went on to make nine first team appearances, scoring one goal in the Papa John’s Trophy against Newcastle United.

He failed to hold down a regular place, however, and after the arrival of Ben Jackson and Declan John on loan in January was not registered in the squad at the end of the window.

Waterford, who are managed by former Everton midfielder Kevin Sheedy, kick off their season on March 19 at Drogheda United.

Mascoll will join another former Wanderer, Daryl Murphy, in the squad.

Meanwhile, Ian Evatt is still seeking improvement at Bolton despite winning the last four league games.

The Wanderers boss is looking forward to concentrating on fine-tuning tactical improvement in his players rather than tackling the fundamental issues which cropped up so regularly in the first half of the season.

“There’s loads on information that we’ve got to give the players and tactical awareness, but normally what’s happened so far this season, especially early on, was as we start to layer it, I’ve said before about the old garden hose - you put your finger over one leak and then it starts leaking somewhere else and I’ve run out of fingers at times,” he said.

“I’m really pleased that I can start to layer some detail into them. You saw some of the combination play in the first half where the wide forwards are coming inside and the full-backs are getting down the side and because we’ve got MJ as a security, we can afford to push both full-backs on.

“They’re getting more comfortable in their shape game by game and it helps that we’ve got probably one of the best surfaces in the league at the moment, even though it’s not perfect.

“But it helps us be expansive and play our stuff, but we’ve got seven more home games and we want to try and win all of those and we need to pick up points away from home. We’ve got lots of hard work to do and we’ll keep going and improving.”
