ANTONI Sarcevic will be a proud man if he leads Wanderers to automatic promotion this weekend.

The Bolton skipper did not hide away from the huge expectation last summer when he signed at the UniBol from Plymouth Argyle - and voiced his disappointment when his high standards were not met midway through the campaign.

But the midfielder has been delighted by the way the club turned its fortunes around post-Winter transfer window and believes there is now enough quality in the squad to see the job through with victory against Exeter City on Saturday.

“I signed for this club for one reason and one reason only, to get it promoted,” Sarcevic told The Bolton News. “So to be captain and to start getting it back up the leagues is something me and my family can be proud of, and I can’t wait to try and get it done.”

Wanderers’ incredible run of form since February has helped them spring from 20th to third and still have a shot at winning the League Two title outright.

Sarcevic says recruitment was the major factor in banishing the sense of underachievement and building a team that now has serious momentum.

“I think people can see for themselves and I don’t want to disrespect anyone but we have brought players who have been there, done it, seen it, and should be here playing for Bolton Wanderers,” he said. “I think it has helped all-round in the run we have been on.

“You don’t go on runs like this without a good squad and you have seen since January it is chalk and cheese. This is a good group of lads on the pitch and off it, so it has helped massively in building a good morale. Everyone is on the same page now and I can’t wait to go again Saturday.”

Exeter City hosted Grimsby Town last night and have their own designs on a play-off spot, making them potentially dangerous opponents.

Arthur Gnahoua saved a point against the Grecians back in mid-January when Bolton still sat 16th in the table.

Sarcevic maintains the modern-day Wanderers side is much better equipped to get the result they need to seal a top three spot with a game to spare.

“It will be a good fixture, they are a good team and they have still got something to play for so it we need to make sure we are at it but if we play anywhere near where we have done for the second half of the season I can’t see any problem,” he said.

“They want to get in the play-offs but hopefully we can get our job done and then we can have a good Saturday afternoon.”
