Following a dramatic opening round of the Bolton Hospital Cup, the eight victorious clubs battled it out to book their semi-final spot.

The quarter-finals got underway at Manchester League outfit Elton Vale as they hosted West Lancashire League side Turton.

Whilst both sides were frustrated in the opening stages, the referee pointed to the spot on the 10-minute mark after an unnecessary challenge inside the Vale penalty area grounded a Turton forward.

Captain Kieron Sisson stepped up and saw his spot-kick saved before reacting quickly to slot the rebound home and give his side the lead.

The match remained tight as Vale pushed for an equaliser, which subsequently came on the stroke of half-time, after a defensive mix-up.

Deep into the second half, Turton edged in front as a wayward 20-yard shot from Scott Fitzsimmons was steered into the top corner by the head of Sam Crook.

Despite late pressure from Vale who themselves enjoyed periods of impressive play, Turton held out to seal their place in the semi-finals.

Walshaw hosted Tempest United in the second quarter-final, and the anticipated tie lived up to expectations.

Goals from Lee Gaskell and Matty Russell were enough to see Walshaw progress, despite Tempest’s best efforts to find an equaliser.

It was a night Gaskell will likely remember for some time, as he found himself seeing the game out between the sticks after an injury to goalkeeper Bruno Silva.

Elsewhere, Hindsford saw off Atherton Town 2-0 at Squires Lane and an extremely competitive tie between CMB and Old Boltonians went the way of the home side, who prevailed 2-1.

Quarter-finals: Elton Vale 1-2 Turton, Walshaw 2-1 Tempest, Hindsford 2-0 Atherton Town, CMB 2-1 Old Boltonians.

Semi-final draw: Walshaw v CMB (Wed, May 5 at Stoneclough), Hindsford Tonics v Turton FC (Thurs, May 6 at CMB).
