WANDERERS have not yet had any concrete interest in players they are looking to offload this summer.

Ian Evatt has warned that “four or five” squad members could be shipped out in the coming weeks to make way for another couple of signings towards the back end of the transfer window.

Players such as Reiss Greenidge, Brandon Comley and Ali Crawford are understood to be available for transfer, having struggled to break into the team at the end of last season in League Two.

Evatt says he has had some contact from opposition managers about players he may be willing to let go but that no official bids have been made.

For now, he is happy to have completed a large chunk of his incoming business early in the summer – which he sees as a real show of faith from the club’s ownership.

“We have had some interest,” he said of the potential departees, “But it is slow at the moment, with finances being tight in a lot of places.

“I think that is where I’m blessed with our board, really. Money is tight so some clubs would prefer to save a month’s salary in June or July and bring players in later in the pre-season but I see it the other way.

“Having a squad for the full pre-season gives you a chance to work on things, get people to settle quicker and that is vitally important. I thank the board for that.

“Things are going to happen, no doubt about it. We have had phone calls but at the moment there is nothing to report.”

Evatt has brought in first team coach Sam Hird this summer and plans to build a reserve team to play in the Central League next season.

Having been stripped down to the bare bones in recent years, and effectively cordoned off by the pandemic, the training ground and academy is now steadily being restocked with staff to give the feel of a club climbing back to its feet again.

“Obviously the world is in a different place and thank goodness for that because we’ve all suffered enough this past 18 months,” Evatt said.

“Things are different, the club is in a better place, the staffing structure is better and we’re able to give a better level of service to handle a bigger squad.

“I can’t speak highly enough of what has been happening on the training ground this last week or so. The board have backed me, not only in recruiting players but also staff, and the day-to-day stuff that people don’t really see has improved. I thank Sharon and the board for that because it feels the club is moving in the right direction, and that’s really pleasing.”
