WANDERERS winger Xavier Amaechi says his discussions with boss Ian Evatt made him want to come and play at the UniBol.

The Whites brought in the 20-year-old on an initial six-month loan deal from Hamburg ahead of their return to League One.

And Amaechi was impressed with the Bolton manager from their first interactions.

“I had contact with the gaffer a few weeks before pre-season and he told me his plans. He wants to climb up the league and get back to the Championship - that’s how it started,” he said.

“He was just really positive. I think he’s ambitious as well, so that came across."

Amaechi – an England Under-20 international - joined Hamburg from Arsenal in 2019 and has made five first-team appearances for the Bundesliga 2 side.

The winger is aiming for regular playing time in League One over the coming season.

“I just want to get into a good rhythm and obviously help the team progress,” he said.

“It’s more about the team - helping them – and myself as well, playing. Hopefully, we can perform strongly in the league and get back up to the Championship.”

Amaechi - who spent time on loan at Karlsruher SC last term - has featured in all three pre-season games so far and managed 90 minutes against FC United of Manchester at the weekend.

The 20-year-old is excited to show the Wanderers fans what he can do.

“I like to dribble, I like to go one-v-one, I like to come in from the right and shoot, and just work for the team. I like to win as well," he said.

“I know (Bolton) like to keep the ball on the ground and play, and I like the philosophy and how the coach wants to play."
