The Wanderers Supporters’ Trust has welcomed calls for an independent regulator for football following a fan-led review.

The review – led by Tracey Crouch MP – has found that action is needed to protect the future of the sport regarding issues such as financial regulation and ownership.

It was launched following several English clubs’ attempts to form a breakaway European Super League, and involved gathering the views of a variety of stakeholders including supporters, clubs and administrators.

Other measures proposed by Crouch include further investigation on revenue flows within the football pyramid - including parachute payments - and a joined-up approach to improve player welfare, particularly players released from academies.

Wanderers Supporters’ Trust has been involved in several meetings with the review panel and Government representatives.

A statement from the Trust reads: "Football is nothing without the fans and their voices need to be heard. We will look to continue our involvement in these important matters."

In response to the review, the EFL said: “We will now consider the recommendations in full and continue to push for a redistribution of the game’s finances, which require a fundamental reset in order to deliver long-term sustainability across the pyramid.

“As ever, the league will continue to engage with clubs, authorities, supporter groups, the review team and others as part of the process.”

The FA added: “Fans are at the heart of football and that has been felt more than ever over the last year. We will now review the findings in full and look forward to being able to contribute further as it continues.”

Wanderers Supporters’ Trust is also supporting the Fair Game project – a group of EFL and non-league clubs calling for change in how football is administered.

“The need for a new football regulator is now indisputable,” said Niall Couper, the group’s director.

“Football cannot continue in the same unsustainable way. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with Tracey Crouch to build a new and refreshing direction for football.

“English football has become a Siren to gamblers. As the letter rightly highlights, too many clubs routinely spend way above recommended levels on players’ wages.

“Owners should no longer be allowed to play Russian roulette with the history and traditions of football clubs.

“If we want realistic long-term change, we need to incentivise and encourage good governance. Let’s ditch the parachute and solidarity payments and distribute that money to clubs that are run well and properly support the pyramid.”
