Wanderers boss Ian Evatt was pleased with his players’ attitudes in their friendly win at Chorley.

Adam Senior got the only goal with a towering header in the first half as the Whites preserved their unbeaten pre-season record.

Several players were played out of their natural positions, but Evatt was impressed by their professionalism.

“I actually really enjoyed the game,” he said. “I thought first half we were excellent. We moved the ball really well.

“Obviously playing loads of players out of position, but their attitude was first class and as I said they showed bravery and personality with the ball but they also stood up against a very physical team.”

“Chorley are a good side. They’ve beaten Morecambe this pre-season, they’ve beaten Wigan this pre-season.

“With a team with square pegs in round holes, we’ve dominated the game, and it’s only when we started to make changes in the second half that the game kind of changed.

“But even then, they battled and fought and it’s a wonderful experience for our youngsters to come on the pitch and play with the senior players against a men’s football team, so a good night all round.”

Senior impressed at both ends of the pitch, also making a vital clearance on the line in the second half.

And Evatt is pleased with the defender’s progress in pre-season.

“Him more than most young players has really come on this pre-season,” added Evatt. “He’s developed no end. He’s started to understand his body and he’s a different type of centre back.

“He isn’t a big dominant Rico (Santos) type but he’s more of an Alex Baptiste type, and he needs to watch Alex and obviously Sam (Hird) and Peter (Atherton), who aren’t very big.

“It’s about hiding your deficiencies and playing to your strengths, and he’s doing that at the moment. Against big physical forwards he handled them well - he didn’t want physical contact, he used his mobility and played around them which is great for a young players to learn that.

“So yeah, pleased with him and pleased with all of them really.”

Ali Crawford, Dennis Politic and Ronan Darcy also caught the eye, and Evatt is pleased they were able to get more minutes on the pitch.

He said: “Ali’s missed a lot of pre-season. This is his first full game more or less and he did great. Ali suits the way we play because he can handle the ball, as they all can. So yeah, another positive performance from him.

“Dennis first half really showed us some glimpses of quality. He blew up second half but that’s to be expected with the amount of time he’s missed.

“Ronan has really impressed me pre-season as well. His attitude has been first class. Physically he’s developing, he’s becoming stronger, more robust, really pleased with him.”
