MK Dons boss Russell Martin has joined Swansea City ahead of Saturday’s League One opener against Wanderers.

The 35-year-old arrives at the Liberty Stadium following the departure of Steve Cooper.

It is a blow for the Dons, who kick-off their league campaign with a trip to the UniBol.

“I am immensely proud and excited, to be honest,” Martin told Swansea's official website.

“Everything I have heard about the club – be it from the owners, the people here who work inside the club, and people who have been here before that I know – underlines how special it is."

Martin’s coaching team of Luke Williams, Dean Thornton and Matt Gill are also heading to the Liberty Stadium.

A statement from MK Dons reads: "It goes without saying that we are extremely disappointed by the timing of this departure.

"Nevertheless, the club would like to thank Russell for his contribution and work during his 21 months in charge and wish him and his team all the best for the future."
