Championship side Barnsley stand between Wanderers and a place in the second round of the League Cup.

The Tykes finished fifth in the Championship last season, narrowly missing out on a trip to Wembley in the playoffs.

Marc Iles caught up with Doug O’Kane from the Barnsley Chronicle to get the lowdown on the Yorkshire outfit.

Barnsley kicked off the new season with a 1-1 draw at Cardiff City. How did they look?

Really good start. Cardiff away seemed like quite a tough opening day fixture. It’s always a difficult place to go, especially for Barnsley, they’ve got a really bad record there.

Cardiff are such a physical team but coming from behind, it was a good performance overall. Lots of decent individual displays and back in front of fans again, it was a really positive day for the club.

With a new manager coming in this summer, has the squad changed much?

No, a lot of times at Barnsley there’s been 10 outs and 10 ins but this summer has been nothing like that.

They’ve lost two main players who would have started in Alex Mowatt, the captain, who’s gone with Valerian Ismael to West Brom. And they’ve also lost Daryl Dike who was only on loan, he was a very successful striker.

But they’ve added four players - three strikers and a central midfielder in Josh Benson. None of those started on Saturday because they’re catching up with fitness. But hopefully they’ll make a decent impact soon.

Are you expecting many changes on Tuesday night?

Yes, I think so. It’s hard to put a number on exactly how many changes they’ll make but four or five maybe.

There are a few players who played on Saturday who had just come back from long-term injuries, so I doubt they’ll play again – the likes of Liam Kitching and Ben Williams.

And there’s other players who weren’t quite fit for Saturday but could be involved in the squad, and there will be a few rotated to give other players a chance.

Barnsley seemed to go more direct against Cardiff. They seem to be able to switch approaches…

The style of play is a big issue for Barnsley at the moment. Last season under Ismael it was very direct – I think the most long balls in the division.

The whole idea was to go long, try to catch the opposition out with high balls over the top and when you get it in dangerous areas you can play decent football and be more creative.

But it’s different this time - Markus Schopp has always passed out from the back, so he’s said it’s going to be a mix of the two styles.

And finally, what’s your score prediction?

Barnsley seem like they’re taking this very seriously. Obviously, they will make a few changes to give people a chance and freshen things up.

I think it will be close but I’ll go for a 2-1 win for Barnsley.
