Barnsley boss Markus Schopp called his side’s penalty shootout defeat against Wanderers “the worst way to go out”.

Joel Dixon saved Devante Cole’s spot-kick as the Whites booked their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup following a goalless draw at the UniBol.

Schopp – who took charge at Oakwell this summer following Valerian Ismael’s move to West Brom – was left ruing missed chances in the first half.

"It's the worst way to go out with the last penalty,” he told the Barnsley Chronicle. “We did a good job for 60 minutes but we have had a problem in pre-season and in Cardiff that we create a lot but don't score.

“We have the big opportunity at the start with Vic's (Victor Adeboyejo) header. To open a game in this way would be awesome, so we have to improve that.

“After 60 minutes, it was not our game anymore. But we made changes which caused this."

It was the first time Wanderers made it past the opening round of the League Cup since the 2017/18 campaign when they ran out 2-1 winners at Crewe Alexandra.

Defender Jasper Moon added: “It's disappointing to go out but we can take some positives. A lot of lads got minutes who wouldn't normally play. But overall we are disappointed that we lost.

“The style of play the new gaffer has come in with is trying to play out more, and in the first half we got it going. In the second half they stepped higher and pressed more which made it harder for us.

“They played higher so balls in behind would have been the option but they made it hard for us."

The second-round draw takes place this evening and the fixtures will be played in the week commencing August 23.
