WANDERERS had the highest attendance in Tuesday night's round of Carabao Cup games as they overcame Championship side Barnsley on penalties.

7,147 supporters were in attendance at the UniBol as the Whites booked their place in the second round following a goalless draw. 1,608 Barnsley fans made the journey from Yorkshire.

Antoni Sarcevic, Lloyd Isgrove, Amadou Bakayoko, Elias Kachunga and Josh Sheehan all scored from the spot, while Joel Dixon saved from Devante Cole.

It is the first time Wanderers have made it past the opening round since the 2017/18 season when they ran out 2-1 winners at Crewe Alexandra.

The second highest attendance from the opening round came from Bramall Lane as 6,778 supporters saw Sheffield United edged past Carlisle.

Meanwhile, 6,199 fans were in attendance at St Andrew’s as Birmingham City beat Colchester United, and 6,154 supporters watched Ipswich Town’s defeat against Newport County at Portman Road.

The only figure higher than Wanderers' total from the opening round came at Hillsbrough as Sheffield Wednesday overcame Huddersfield Town. 12,860 fans were in attendance, however, it's worth noting that the game was played on Sunday, August 1.

It is more good news for the Whites, who saw one of the biggest attendance increases in League One against MK Dons at the weekend.

The draw for the Carabao Cup second round takes place live on Sky Sports this evening and the games will be played in the week commencing Monday, August 23.

Ian Evatt’s men are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they head to Plough Lane to face AFC Wimbledon in League One (KO 3pm).
