Athletes in Bolton will be pushed to the limits this weekend as two Ironman events take place in the town.

On Saturday the Ironkids will take place where 3,000 youngsters will rund through the town centre and then around the town hall.

There will also be fairground rides, face painting and a climbing wall beginning at 9am.

The following day the Ironman 70.3 will take place where participants will have to go through a 1.2 mile swim at Pennington Flash, a 56 mile bike ride and then a half marathon which finishes at Victoria Square in Bolton.

It is the first time Bolton has hosted two Ironman events in a year after one took place in July.

Bolton Council leader Martyn Cox said it would bring a "special atmosphere."

He said: "Following the success of IRONMAN in the summer, we’re delighted to host Ironman and Ironkids this month.

“The two-day event promises to be a fantastic family weekend and always brings a special atmosphere to Bolton.

“I hope all the athletes and children racing have a great time.”

Participants are urged to take a lateral flow test in advance of the event to ensure it is Covid safe.

Road closures will be in place due to the events and people taking part are urged to plan their journey in advance.
