WANDERERS (4-1-4-1)

JOEL DIXON…6.5.

Showed his reactions to tip over Gregory’s header in the first half and touched the ball more times than nine of the 11 starting Wednesday players.

GETHIN JONES…6.5.

Got into some good positions on the right and put a few useful crosses in. Bannan’s tendency to drift to his side meant he had to keep his eyes open, defensively.

RICARDO SANTOS…5.5.

There were a few uncharacteristic slips from the big man, who also let Gregory get ahead of him to score the winning goal.

GEORGE JOHNSTON…7.

Neat and tidy in possession, as ever, and showed off his passing range with a couple of lovely diagonals in the second half.

DECLAN JOHN…7.

Best outing for a while for the Welshman, who saw plenty of the ball and made Bolton look more balanced than they have in recent weeks.

MJ WILLIAMS…6.5.

Has set sky high standards at Bolton, so any drop in performance stands out a mile. He had a good battle with the physical Paterson but wasn’t at his absolute best.

ANTONI SARCEVIC…6.

Loads of energy, always willing to take the ball on, but one of a few players who will be re-living the chances that went astray.

KIERAN LEE…7.5.

Another one who should have a goal to his name. Clearly motivated on the day and was in the thick of everything positive that Wanderers did.

ELIAS KACHUNGA…5.5.

Set the tone for what was to follow with that early poor pass to Doyle, a chance he should have taken himself. Didn’t make the most of his Hillsborough return.

EOIN DOYLE…5.5.

Shouldn’t be judged on goals alone, of course, but was the conviction there at times? Going through a tough spell at the moment.

DAPO AFOLAYAN…6.5.

Wednesday had no answer to him in the first half but perhaps allowed his frustration to lessen his impact later on. The booking was plain wrong.

Subs: Isgrove 74 (for Kachunga) – Tried to get involved.

Sheehan 74 (for Sarcevic) – Had plenty of the ball but couldn’t cut through.

Bakayoko 74 (for Doyle) – Not the impact he wanted.

Not used: Delfouneso, Thomason, Baptiste, Gordon Wednesday (3-4-1-2): Wildsmith; Palmer, Iorfa, Gibson; Hunt, Hutchinson, Bannan, Brown; Paterson; Gregory, Berahino.

Subs: Adeniran 45 (for Gibson), Dunkley 45 (for Hutchinson), Shodipo 74 (for Brown).

Not used: Kamberi, Corbeanu, Wing, Render.

Referee: David Rock – 4/10. Looking back at some of the key calls made by the Hertfordshire official, he got them wrong. Should not be used an excuse for defeat but there is no doubt his call not to send off Iorfa and the Afolayan booking were game-defining moments.

Attendance: 23,692 (3,187)
