SOME of Wanderers’ most revered strikers feature heavily in a new book detailing the 50 greatest goalscorers in the history of British football.

Author Neil Beacom has compiled a detailed list dating from the early days of the Football League, all the way up to the modern Premier League era. And as you would expect, Bolton are well-represented.

Nat Lofthouse, Roger Hunt and David Jack – plus the Bolton-born Tommy Lawton - are given full profile chapters, which unearth some interesting nuggets of information on players whose careers have been well documented.

Did you know, for example, that Lofty had a side-bet of £1 with his manager, Bill Ridding, that he would return from a broken collarbone in time to face Manchester United in the 1958 FA Cup final?

The contribution of other Wanderers legends like Joe Smith, Frank Worthington and Franny Lee is also covered by the 220-page book, which chronicles the many different styles of striker which have emerged in England and Scotland over the last century-and-a-half.

Celebrating the art and joy of goalscoring, 50 Greatest Goalscorers is available to order from most bookshops and UK internet book retailers, including Amazon and WH Smith.

Review The Bolton News says: “A list containing the 50 best of anything in football is always going to be subjective but most of the major boxes are ticked here by author Neil Beacom in what is a bright and well-researched read.

“Do I think Nicolas Anelka’s 157 goals in 450 games for Bolton, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and West Brom should have got a mention? Yes, I do. But, in general, it is hard to quibble with many of the selections.

“The author tries to dip into articles and autobiographies to add a bit of colour to what could have been a very stat-heavy text. And while that was not always possible for some of the older players on the list, it is certainly a book which can be dipped into at leisure.

“At £12.99 or less, depending on where you shop, 50 Greatest Goalscorers is a very decent record of some of the most interesting characters the game has had to offer.”
