EX-WANDERERS midfielder Brandon Comley has been offered a route back into football with Ayr United.

The 26-year-old terminated his contract with the Whites late last year and had been trying to win a deal at League Two Carlisle United until recently.

According to the Daily Record, he has now accepted a trial with the Scottish Championship outfit, impressing in a behind-closed-doors training game against Morton earlier this week.

Comley made his final appearance for Bolton in the 4-1 win against Liverpool Under-21s in the Papa John’s Trophy group stages in October.

In total he played just 15 times for the Whites, dropping completely off Ian Evatt’s radar following a 6-3 home defeat to Port Vale in League Two.

Carlisle passed up on the chance to sign Comley last week after bringing him to Brunton Park to train.

Keith Millen said the timing of the decision would allow him to secure a club before the January window, when squads would have to be registered with their respective leagues.

“We had a practice game on Tuesday and it was the first time I’d seen him in a game, other than on video,” he told the News and Star.

“He [Comley] did well, did what he does, but I felt I needed to make a decision this week for his sake more than mine.

“I would have been happy for him to carry on training with us a bit longer, but for the player, he needs to get himself sorted.

“I asked myself, ‘What more do I need to see that’s going to change my mind?’ “He was good to have around the place, is a good player and has got more fitness into him, so wherever he goes now they’ll be getting someone who’s fitter.

“We’ve helped him in that respect but I couldn’t guarantee him a place in the team.

“We’ve got good competition for places, and when I’m not sure on something I won’t do it.

“The next one or two I bring in I think need to be something a little bit different, because I think we’re in a good place now and we don’t just need more bodies.”
