WANDERERS striker Dion Charles came off the bench and was involved in a goal as Northern Ireland won 3-1 at Luxembourg.

Charles was introduced just after the hour mark, replacing Wigan forward Josh Magennis.

The Bolton man played a part in the second goal, showing good feet in the build-up before diverting Niall McGinn’s low cross into the path of Steven Davis.

It was Charles’ first international appearance since October, having been dropped due to a lack of playing time at Accrington.

He has impressed in League One since making the switch to Wanderers and it was no surprise to see him given an opportunity by Ian Baraclough.

Northern Ireland took the lead after 16 minutes when Magennis found the bottom corner with a clinical strike after winning the ball high up the pitch.

But the hosts hit back after the break when Marvin Martins headed home from close range from a corner.

Davis put the Baraclough’s men back in front before Gavin Whyte wrapped up the result five minutes from time, keeping his cool to slot home.

Charles could feature on Tuesday night as they return to home soil to face Hungary at Windsor Park (KO 7:45pm).

Meanwhile, Amadou Bakayoko made his Sierra Leone debut in a 3-0 defeat against Togo on Thursday afternoon.

The forward played 90 minutes but opportunities were few and far between as his side struggled to gain a foothold in the match.

Sierra Leone also have matches coming up against Liberia and Congo before the end of the international break.
