Two walking football stars from Bolton are back home after representing England in Spain.

David Mort, 71, and Andy Clarke, 59, represented their country for the Over-70s and Over-50s sides respectively during a trip to Bilbao.

The Over-70s played one game against their Italian counterparts, winning 3-0 with David scoring two goals on his debut for the national team.

“It was fantastic,” David said. “I had a great time. It all went just as I wanted it to.

“It was only a small stadium with hundreds of fans, not thousands, and it’s not exactly Harry Kane but it was just as important to me.

“I can’t tell you how what it’s like walking out to the national anthem. You feel so proud.

“I got to keep the kit, and next week we get presented without international cap. I’ll walk around Tesco with it on and do the big shop.”

The 50s took part in a four-team tournament, including teams representing Italy, France and the Basque country.

Andy, who has represented England previously, bagged himself a goal in the 50s 4-0 win over the French side.

However, in the final against the Basque team, after going one goal up early in the first half, they suffered a 2-1 defeat. Andy now has five goals in his four appearances for England over 50s.

Retired policeman Andy said: “It was a great experience. Fantastic.

“I had a really enjoyable trip with a great bunch of lads.

“The first time you put the England shirt on is the best but it’s still great.

“Everyone was very friendly. It was good, but shame about the result.”

Andy had a heart attack while on the pitch in December last year, but he was back playing his beloved walking football within two months.

He said: “It was a bit of a shock. There were no prior warnings. I think I overexerted myself.

“I do feel fine now fitness-wise, but you never know what’s going to happen.”

David said: “Andy Clarke is amazing doing what he’s done after he had a heart attack on the pitch. I didn’t think I’d see him again.

“I made sure I watched his game.”

He added: “I’ve been going to beginners’ sessions recently with people a similar age to me who haven’t put their boots on for 30 years. I’ve been encouraging people to get off their backsides and stop watching the telly.”

“I’m trying my best to encourage people to do what I’ve done. I get a lot of satisfaction out of that.

“I’d like to be an ambassador for old chaps playing football. I’m happy I can inspire people to do it.”
