Wanderers boss Ian Evatt isn’t getting carried away despite a convincing 3-0 win against Wycombe at the UniBol.

Kyle Dempsey bagged a brace either side of half-time, with Aaron Morley also on target against a side that narrowly missed out on promotion last season.

Evatt says it was a “huge step up” from their 1-1 draw at Ipswich on the opening day but is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“It was a good performance and a good three points, but that’s all it is. It is only three points,” said the Bolton chief.

“Really pleased at a huge step up from last week. We looked more energetic, we looked braver and more courageous in possession, and that’s what we ask for.

“We do ask for bravery out of possession but that should just be a given to win tackles, headers and duels. But when we speak about bravery and courage it is receiving the ball in tight areas, playing forwards in transition and running forwards in transition, and I thought we did that really well today.

“We looked like a good team. We looked energetic, forward-thinking, pro-active. They are a really good team and they ask you loads and loads of questions.

“They are one of those teams, regardless of the scoreline, are never out of a game. We said that to the players, they are constantly knocking on the door.

“They have lots of final third entries and we have to defend those, and then make sure that we are precise with our counter attacks, and I thought we were today.”

Dapo Afolayan looked lively throughout for Wanderers, causing the Wycombe defence countless problems.

When asked about Afolayan’s performance, Evatt added: “I don’t think there is one player out there today that you can think underperformed, and that is a sign of a good performance.

“Dapo was excellent, but so were they all. I am not here to single out individual performances. I am here to say what we did well and what we didn’t do well. Today, we did a lot more things right.

“Last week, I was frustrated because I think we are better than that. I know it’s a good point and people say it’s a good point, but I didn’t really feel like that.

“This week, I felt a lot more positive and happier. We have done lots of hard work on the training pitch and it came to fruition today.

“We are not going to get carried away though. It is one win, three points, lots of work to do.”
