Wanderers boss Ian Evatt says Kyle Dempsey showed “what a good player he is” in the 3-0 win against Wycombe.

Dempsey bagged a brace either side of half-time, beating Tyla Dickinson with a couple of clinical finishes as the Whites recorded their first win of the season.

The midfielder has had a frustrating start to his Bolton career due to a series of niggles but Evatt is confident they are a thing of the past.

“We’re trying to recruit players that offer us different things, and we can play two sixes and a 10 or we can play a single six and two eights,” he explained.

“Today we went with the two eights for more energy and forward runs. Kyle and Aaron (Morley) did that with the goals.

“Kyle’s a very good player. We’ve been hit and miss really with injuries since he’s come but that was mostly historical stuff and the start of last season.

“But he’s over them now. He’s been training really well and he’s fully fit and he showed today what a good player he is.”

Jack Iredale made his debut at left wing-back, impressing at both ends of the pitch against the Chairboys.

Evatt added: “We’ve tried to recruit players that can cope with all opposition and all challenges this season, and Declan (John) has been one of our bright lights really since I’ve been at the club.

“And today was a game really where we needed to be more secure and solid - especially in the out of possession scenarios and the long balls, the goal kicks, the diagonals.

“We had to stand up to that today, and Jack’s better suited and better equipped to deal with those and we did that great. Declan’s still a huge player for us.

“We’ve got a great squad of players that offer us many different things and we’ve just got to keep them all in one piece first and foremost, and then keep them on board and on side.

“That’s my job. It is a tough job but hopefully they will all buy in because they can see the rewards at the end of it.”

The Bolton chief was pleased with the quality his side showed in the final third but also made sure to give credit to his defenders, who stood firm against a dangerous Wycombe attack.

“If I’m being slightly nit picky, we had some more opportunities that we could have been more clinical and ruthless with and executed our final decision better,” he said. “But we looked fast on transition, we attacked with speed and with good detail.

“We have been working really hard on that - it is what we asked the players to do today and they have shown that in abundance.

“The pleasing thing for me was the clean sheet – they are always handy, especially when you have got the firepower that we have.

“Even more so against Wycombe, who are really challenging to defend against. The gameplan, the lads applied it perfectly really and it was a solid win.”
