A fine second-half comeback from Daisy Hill earned then a 3-2 victory over Holker Old Boys on Saturday, and preserved their 100-per-cent record in North West Counties League First Division North.

A goal down at the break, Daisy hit back through skipper Connor Hughes and his namesake and recent signing Connor J Hughes to go 2-1 ahead, and Mitchell Nolan added a cracking third goal on his debut for the club.

Although Holker pulled a goal back late on, Daisy held on to clinch the win with a performance that delighted manager Leighton Mills.

“In the first half I thought we were completely dominant for 40 minutes, and created a lot of chances, and it was a very pleasing half for us,” said Mills.

“Even though we went in 1-0 down at half time, they could hardly get out of their own half for long periods, and just sucker punched us with a goal.

“Our first goal was coming until they scored. But that happens in football.

“I went in at half time and the message to the lads was we were maybe just going a little bit too long at times, and we needed to get the ball down and shorten it up, and get balls into feet a bit more.

“We also said we had got to be a bit more clinical in the second half, as we had chances in the first half, and didn’t take them. In the end we had three good finishes for our goals.

“In the last two or three minutes they pushed five up front (looking for an equaliser) and they had to do that, but we reacted well to that, and had lads out there who were willing to put their bodies on the line.

“Overall, I felt we passed them off the park in the first half, and they couldn’t live with us in the second half.

“I think the scoreline flattered Holker a bit, it wasn’t a 3-2 game, we should have won by a bigger score.

“To be fair to them, they have had to start with two away games, but they still have some of their good players from last season, and I think they will be up there challenging again at the end of the season.

“But we have got quality, and character and desire to go and get three points against anyone, and we’ve shown now two games running that we can go in behind at half time and come out and win”.

Daisy Hill’s next game in the North West Counties League First Division North is tomorrow when they travel to face Pilkington (7.45pm).
