There remains a confidence that the Ryder Cup could come to Bolton following the council’s refusal to defend decision to reject the Hulton Park plans.

Developers Peel L&P are at pains to stress that the plans for the site are wholly dependent on whether the proposed site is chosen to host the Ryder Cup in 2031 or 2035.

If the Hulton Park site gets given the green light to be the UK’s choice for a Ryder Cup venue, it would still need to be chosen out of a host of other golf courses across Europe.

There are currently two venues in the running to be the UK’s option – The London Club in Kent and the proposed new venue at Hulton Park – but the decision is currently paused, confirmed major events department at government agency UK Sport.

Peel L&P are confident because they have one key advantage over their rival, a spokesperson has confirmed.

The most recent government White Paper concerning Levelling Up explicitly expressed the desire to hold major evens such as the Ryder Cup outside of London.

“If it comes to Levelling Up, it would make sense,” the spokesperson said.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have made it clear that there are currently no plans for a Ryder Cup bid in the UK, although that does not mean that this will not change.

A DCMS spokesperson said: “The Spending Review details funding for bids and there is no allocation for Ryder Cup bids in either 2031 or 2035, although that could change.

“The decision for bidding for the Ryder Cup was made at the Spending Review in Autumn 2021, and update in the spring.

At this stage we are not bidding for 2031 and we don’t have any funding right now for 2035.”

The Hulton Park plans have led to opposition in parts of the community.

Campaign group HEART - Hulton Estate Area Residents Together – have been vocal about their long-term disapproval of the plans due to the fact that much of the development will be built on green belt land, as well as Hulton Park’s rich historical heritage.
