After the recent world-class performances of Sophie Walton and Ola Abidogun, the success for Horwich Harriers continues with news Isaac Battye has been selected for the England team in the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships in Ambleside next month.

Battye, coached by Olympian Stuart Stokes, will be making his England debut after missing most of last season due to injury.

This year he has won the Greater Manchester fell-running championship and was fourth at the British Inter-counties Fell championships.

It will further inspire the club’s younger members and 18 Horwich juniors enjoyed the competition on track and field at Wigan’s Robin Park ast Friday evening.

At Year 5/6 ,Abigail Ajet won the long jump and Grace Freary won the 1200m.

There were medals, too, for Sarah Lawman, Gracie Sherborne and Amelia Shan at Year 5/6 and at Year 3/4 for Bobby Charnock, Jack Farrell, Donnie Johnson and Harry O’Connor.

The next day, in even hotter conditions, Chidera Ajet had a tough schedule at the Northern Championships in Liverpool, collecting two bronze medals and a silver at under-13.

Chidera had to do a 100m heat in the middle of the long jump and with a personal best of 13.04secs, qualified for the final where he finished third before he recovered well to take second place in the 200m final where the judges couldn’t split the times of 26.53 for the first two - another PB for Chidera.

There was success elsewhere for the Horwich juniors with Louis and Harry Yates winning their age categories at the Boulsworth fell race - the results confirming Harry has this year won the Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix u13 series and Louis has finished second in the u9 series.

At the Ramsbottom Summer junior race, Gabriella Collings was first girl and Ste Williams in the seniors’ mile event was second M65 behind Graham Schofield, who went on to win the M60 first prize at the Arncliffe Gala fell race four days later.

The same day, it was the latest round in the English fell running championships at Bradwell where Nick Leigh and Danny Hope were first and third M45 finishers.

On the road, there have been recent successes in half marathons for Richard O’Reilly, at the Windmill event in Lytham, where he was first M55, and for Erica Booth at the Lancaster Riverside event, where she was first F40.

In parkrun, there were more first places for Joe Mercer at Marple and Richard Pollitt at Bushy in Dublin.
