Sheffield Wednesday have bolstered their ranks with the signing of Mark McGuinness ahead of Saturday’s clash with Wanderers.

The defender joins the Owls on a season-long loan from Championship side Cardiff City and is eligible to feature at the UniBol.

McGuinness came through the ranks at Arsenal and had a loan spell at Ipswich Town during the 2020/21 season, making 25 appearances in total for the Tractor Boys.

The 21-year-old made the move to Cardiff last summer and was regularly involved as the Welsh outfit finished 18th in the second tier.

He has also played for the Republic of Ireland in the Under-19 and Under-21 age groups, representing the latter 14 times.

After the move was announced, the defender wrote on his Twitter page: “Privileged to sign for @SWFC on loan this season.”

The Yorkshire club have also brought in Michael Smith, Michael Ihiekwe and Will Vaulks among others over the summer.

Darren Moore’s side finished fourth in League One last season but suffered a 2-1 aggregate defeat against Sunderland in the play-offs.

The Owls are currently eighth in the table after picking up seven points from their opening four matches.

Moore’s side enter the game on the back of a 2-0 defeat against Peterborough United at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jack Taylor got the goals, while Wednesday played just under an hour with 10 men after Blackpool loanee Reece James was sent off for a foul on Joe Ward.
