Dapo Afolayan and George Johnston have both been nominated for the 2022 North West Football Awards.

Afolayan has been shortlisted for the League One Player of the Season award, having scored 12 goals in 44 appearances last term.

The former West Ham man finished the campaign as the club’s top-scorer, just in front of Amadou Bakayoko.

He now faces competition Accrington Stanley’s Sean McConville, Morecambe’s Cole Stockton, Fleetwood Town’s Alex Cairns and Wigan Athletic’s Will Keane.

Meanwhile, Johnston is up for the Rising Star award after becoming an important member of Ian Evatt’s first-team squad last season.

The defender racked up 44 appearances as the Whites finished ninth in their first season back in the third tier and has gone from strength-to-strength since the switch to a back three.

The likes of Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, Everton’s Anthony Gordon and Manchester City’s Jason McAtee are among the names nominated for the prize.

“The player nominations for the 2022 Northwest Football Awards showcase the immense hotbed of talent that exists in both the women’s and men’s games across our region,” read an official statement.

The annual event takes place on Monday, November 7 at The Point, which is part of Emirates Old Trafford.

Head physio Matt Barrass won the Fabrice Muamba Award for services to football medicine and performances in 2021.

Ian Evatt, Ricardo Santos and George Thomason were also shortlisted in their respective categories last year.
