With energy bills set to rise, there has been lots of debate over the prospect of earlier kick-off times across the EFL in recent weeks.

A typical household’s energy bill could now reach £2,500, which is almost double average figures from 12 months ago.

The soaring prices will also have an impact on football clubs around the country, and starting games earlier would means reducing the amount of time floodlights will need to be used.

The EFL were set to discuss the issue today in a meeting led by chairman Rick Parry and chief executive Trevor Birch.

However, Wanderers CEO Neil Hart revealed to The Bolton News that the club will not be advocating early kick-off times.

Elsewhere, League Two outfit Mansfield Town have already announced that their fixture against Walsall on Saturday, October 15 will start at 1pm.

Regardless of Wanderers’ stance, opposition teams deciding to bring forward kick-off times could have a big impact on travelling supporters.

Several fans on social media shared their thoughts on whether the EFL should be open to the idea of earlier matches across the divisions.

Marc Boatwright wrote: “Awful idea. People want a few beers before a game and times as they are now give people from further afield time to get there. Completely ruins the away day experience as well.”

Jack Evans added: “It will be a nightmare for me. It’s 3.5 hours one way for home games. I really don’t want to be leaving early hours.”

And Anita said: “It will be horrendous for people who live far away, but also for people who work late on. Some work is not just 9 till 5.”

Angela Abbott wrote: “Potentially losing families whose kids play grassroots on Saturday mornings and home fans that need to travel.”

Iain Clements agreed with this sentiment, writing: “It doesn’t suit anyone involved in Saturday morning grassroots”.

However, one user took a more light-hearted approach to the subject, saying: “It means I get up earlier. Instead of 8am it will probably be 6am. Ah well.”
