Elias Kachunga is determined to keep the pressure on the sides above Wanderers heading into a demanding period.

Ian Evatt’s men are currently sixth in the League One table despite having no fixture last weekend due to international call-ups.

The Whites were one of the form teams during the second half of last season, but Kachunga believes they are capable of even more.

“We went into this year and knew we had played well at the end of last season, but that it was not where we wanted to finish,” he said.

“This time we have had a quite good start but there is still a lot to improve. We can go to away games and get some ugly wins.

“At home we feel like we can keep hold of the nil first and then win it at the end. This is already an improvement on the last season and we have to keep going with it.

“We need to stay around that top six as long as possible. There are a lot of top teams up there and you can already see it is really tight. Even with the ones who have lost one or drawn one, it is already quite narrow.

“Important months are coming, the winter months, and they are the tougher ones.”

Wanderers are already looking like a tougher not to crack this term, proving they can grind out results in tough conditions.

The recent 1-0 win against Peterborough was a prime example of this trait, eventually finding a way past a stubborn defence.

“Obviously, you can’t play pretty football in every game and expect to win two or three nil against every team,” he added.

“There are games even at home, or especially away when you maybe play on a pitch that is not that good. The weather as well – rain, wind, everything can come.

“These are games where you just have to get over the line, stay compact, take the win and go to the next game.”

“We are still at the start, we have only played a few games. We can still improve on it, but you can already see that there is a different focus.

“The way we go into games and the way we play as a team. We just have to keep improving on this and hopefully we will play a really good season.”

The Whites’ only league defeats so far came against Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle, two sides who are expected to be up there come the end of the season.

“At Plymouth, we had a few chances at 0-0 and if we score there, the game looks thoroughly different. Then the goal was really unlucky,” the forward added.

“Then you have the game against Sheffield, it was really tight. They score the first goal and sometimes it is hard to come back in the game.

“But we have showed that we can stay in games longer, score the first goal and everything looks totally different.”
