Although it is a compliment to the growing strength of our squad, it was good to head down to the UniBol again, after the final round of international call-ups before the forthcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Before that we had enjoyed three league wins on the bounce and optimism was high we could make it four against the Imps from Lincoln, who have had a middling start to the season.

Ian Evatt had to do a roll call of his players returning from international duty and seemed to have a full squad to pick from.

Lincoln soon set their stall out in that they were going to defend en-masse and try and hit us on the break. It would be up to us to break them down and take any chances that came our way.

Most of the first half was a game of attack and defence with us doing the attacking, but mostly failing to create clear-cut chances. However, that changed when Elias Kachunga went down for the umpteenth time in the box and the referee gave the penalty, apparently on advice from his assistant referee. It looked a soft penalty but some you win and some you lose.

Lincoln improved a bit in the second half as they had to come at us, and James Trafford was equal to anything thrown at him. Nowadays we have a strong bench, and it was one of the substitutes, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, who wrapped up the game late on. It was a hard-earned win after yet another physical battle.

On Friday night it was the 25th anniversary of the stadium dinner with Colin Todd and many players from that time in attendance. It was great to see video footage of the games from that era and listen to all the players as they were interviewed. One thing that shone through was the strength and camaraderie of the dressing room, as they all said it did not matter which 11 players took to the field, the whole squad was together and that seems particularly relevant this season. There is also the sense that good things are going to happen again, just like 25 years ago.
