WANDERERS (4-3-3).

JAMES TRAFFORD…5.5.

Was quick off his line a couple of times, brave at Williams’ feet, and had little chance with either goal. Kicking was a little wayward at times, though.

CONOR BRADLEY…6.

Ever positive on the ball but the Liverpool loanee struggled at times to match up physically in the Barnsley midfield and looked swamped at times.

GETHIN JONES…5.5.

Involved in a soft first goal and never quite on his defensive game, Jones did try to make amends going forward and dug out a fine cross for Bodvarsson’s consolation.

RICARDO SANTOS…5.

Seemed slow to react when the ball was bouncing around the Bolton penalty area. Wanderers need their captain to lead the way right now.

JACK IREDALE…5.

A problematic move to full-back, both he and Afolayan were caught watching the ball in the build up to the second goal.

KIERAN LEE…6.5.

Got the press right a couple of times to win back possession deep in Barnsley territory and dependable on the ball. As good as it got for Bolton.

AARON MORLEY…5.5.

Used the ball quite well, especially early on, but perhaps it was his unfamiliarity with the system, but his work out of possession was off the pace.

GEORGE THOMASON…5.5.

Got into the game in fits and starts but another player who looked strangely muted, lacking some of the fire we have seen so often.

KIERAN SADLIER…5.5.

Provided good width and a few very inviting crosses on the right wing but the space behind him was being eaten up by Barnsley at every opportunity. Faded after left wing-back switch.

DION CHARLES…5.

Really going through the mill at the moment. Work around the penalty area looks far from instinctive and his usual buzz around defenders was notably absent.

DAPO AFOLAYAN…5.

Back on the left, he could have made a big point to Evatt, but Bolton couldn’t really get Afolayan into the game and he spent more time chasing back.

Subs: Bodvarsson 6.5, 63 (for Afolayan) – Smart cameo and a goal.

Bakayoko 63 (for Lee) – Added some energy. Need more of this.

Dempsey 63 (for Charles) – Looked like a cup tie after he came on.

Kachunga 75 (for Thomason) – Couple of half-chances.

Beck 75 (for Sadlier) – Bright for his short stint on the left.

Not used: Toal, Sheehan, Johnston, Williams.

Barnsley (3-5-2): Walton 7; Edwards 6, Anderson 6.5, Kitching 6.5; Williams 7, Kane 6, Connell 6, Phillips 7, Cadden 6; Tedic 6, Cole 6.5.

Subs: Martin 5, 70 (for Tedic), Benson 5, 70 (for Kane), Larkeche 78 (for Cadden), Hondermarck 79 (for Phillips), Cundy 90 (for Cole).

Not used: Collins, Jalo, Aitchison, Moon.

Attendance: 5,999.

Referee: Carl Boyeson 7/10 – Used his vast experience to deal with Barnsley’s disruptive tactics well, especially in the second half, ensuring a level playing field. Only downside was an insistence on getting in the way of the ball in the first half an hour.
