Wanderers will welcome Manchester United Under-21s to the UniBol in the Papa Johns Trophy last 16.

The Whites reached this stage thanks to a 3-2 win against League Two outfit Barrow on Tuesday night after goals from Dapo Afolayan, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Elias Kachunga.

Before that, they finished top of Group B following victories against Crewe Alexandra and Leeds United Under-21s.

Ian Evatt’s men are now three matches away from a potential trip to Wembley. However, they were knocked out in the last 16 last season following a 1-0 defeat at Hartlepool United, with Matt Daly getting the decisive goal six minutes from time.

The competition remains regionalised between northern and southern sections at this stage, and last 16 ties are scheduled for the week commencing Monday, December 12. This means Wanderers now have six matches in total during the month of December.

The draw was carried out by former Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan and ex-England international Shaun Wright-Phillips live on Sky Sports News.

“Bolton got a nice home draw so that’s alright,” joked Nolan. “And they’ve got Man United, so hopefully they’ll be pleased with that.”

Wanderers have never faced United's youngsters in a competitive fixture and haven't faced the senior side in more than a decade.

Elsewhere in the northern section, Salford host Port Vale, Everton Under-21s or Mansfield travel to Lincoln, and Burton host Accrington.

Meanwhile, in the southern section, Portsmouth host Stevenage, Chelsea Under-21s head to Cheltenham, Bristol Rovers host MK Dons and Wimbledon travel to Plymouth.
