Wanderers are one step away from Wembley following a 1-0 win against Portsmouth in the Papa Johns quarter-final.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson got the decisive goal during the first half, slotting home after some good work by strike partner Dion Charles.

Ian Evatt's men will now face Accrington Stanley, Cheltenham Town or Plymouth Argyle in the semi-final.

Skipper back in action

It was great to see Ricardo Santos back on the pitch after more than a month on the sidelines due to illness.

Wanderers have now conceded just once in their last seven matches in all competitions, and there is strong competition for places in the backline.

James Trafford also deserves credit, making a crucial stop to deny substitute Recco Hackett in the final stages.

It will be interesting to see whether Evatt sticks with the Aimson-Johnston-Toal trio for Saturday’s league clash with Pompey.

Bodvarsson building momentum

The forward is now up to eight goals for the season and seems to be building momentum after returning from injury.

Bodvarsson took his goal well, and his partnership with Dion Charles is starting to look like it could be key for Wanderers during the second half of the campaign.

Despite several injury setbacks during his first year at the UniBol, the Iceland international has proven how effective he can be at this level.

He will be hoping to push on over the coming weeks and months as the Whites aim to keep building momentum.

Kachunga shines in deeper role

Elias Kachunga impressed against Pompey, refusing to give defenders a moment’s peace with his pressing.

The versatile attacker seems to be more suited to the Number 10 role and could even have had a penalty in the first half.

While Kachunga has only found the net twice this season, he does lots of work out of possession that perhaps goes unnoticed at times.

Kieran Lee and Kyle Dempsey have both been used in the Number 10 role this season, but Kachunga’s performance might have given Evatt food for thought.

One more step

Evatt has previously spoken about what it would mean to reach a Wembley final, and Wanderers are now just 90 minutes away from achieving this feat.

The Whites will learn their semi-final opponent on Saturday afternoon when the draw takes place live on Sky Sports.

Accrington, Cheltenham and League One leaders Plymouth have also booked their place in the last four.

After everything they have been through over the past few years, a trip to Wembley would be a fantastic occasion for Bolton supporters.
