It has been another eventful campaign at Wanderers as Ian Evatt’s men won the Papa Johns Trophy and secured a League One play-off spot.

The Whites finished the regular season strongly, racking up wins against Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers. They will now face fourth-place Barnsley over two legs for a chance to return to Wembley.

Evatt’s men were predicted to finish eighth before a ball had been kicked, according to football statistics website FiveThirtyEight’s predicted table, which was based on a wide range of data from the previous campaign.

Plymouth were one of the biggest ‘over-performers’. The Pilgrims were tipped to finish in 11th place but went on to clinch the title on the final day, passing the 100-point milestone.

Peterborough also finished much higher than their predicted position. Posh were expected to finish 10th but secured the final play-off spot following an impressive turnaround since Darren Ferguson’s return to the hot seat.

MK Dons were the biggest ‘under-performers’. The Dons were tipped to finish fifth after narrowly missing out on automatic promotion last season. But Mark Jackson’s side were relegated on the final day, with a difficult campaign ending in a goalless draw at Burton.

Meanwhile, Forest Green were expected to be comfortable in mid-table after winning the League Two title last term. But the Gloucestershire club ended up in last place, with their relegation confirmed nearly a month before the end of the season.
