Wanderers have sold out their allocation of 2,133 tickets for their trip to Barnsley in the play-offs in “a matter of minutes”.

The Whites could secure a return to Wembley when they head to Oakwell in the second leg on Friday, May 19 (8pm).

Tickets went on sale to season ticket holders at 10am and were quickly snapped up by Wanderers supporters.

The club confirmed the news on its official website and thanked the fans for their “terrific support”.

Earlier this week, The Bolton News revealed that it was Barnsley’s decision to limit the Whites’ away allocation. After learning the share they would be given at Oakwell, Wanderers decided to open to South Stand lower tier for home supporters during the first leg this weekend.

Barnsley chief executive Khaled El-Ahmad has since explained: “It was our choice. We looked at various scenarios that are good for the fans and the team and we decided on just over 2,000 at both games.

“It’s a combination of what we think is good for both clubs and also to provide a chance for as many Barnsley fans as possible to watch the game next Friday.”

Wanderers’ last play-off semi-final was in May 2001 and finished in a 3-0 victory against West Brom, with goals from Gudni Bergsson, Kevin Nolan and Michael Ricketts. The Whites went on to beat Preston North End in the final at the Millennium Stadium and reach the Premier League.

Ian Evatt’s men are in good form, having lost just one of their last 10 matches in all competitions, including the memorable 4-0 win against Plymouth in the Papa Johns Trophy final at Wembley.

Barnsley finished fourth in the League One table as they aim to make an immediate return to the Championship under Michael Duff.

The Tykes were beaten 2-0 by Peterborough on the final day and are now without a win in their last three games.
