WANDERERS (3-4-1-2).

JAMES TRAFFORD…7.

Handling was immaculate on the few shots that he had to deal with – but there was very little he could have done with the goal. Massive boots to fill.

EOIN TOAL…5.5.

Been a big season for him with plenty of progress. The two play-off games showed he has work to do with ball at feet to get to that next level.

RICARDO SANTOS…6.5.

Won loads in the air, defended well one-on-one, yet in possession there seemed a bit too much hesitation, which slowed things down.

GEORGE JOHNSTON…5.5.

All the defensive quality you could ask for. Now needs to use the ball better. Has the tools to be a very good player indeed.

CONOR BRADLEY…7.

Battered from pillar to post once again. For a Liverpool player, he doesn’t half give a lot to the Bolton cause. Will be just as big a miss to Wanderers as Trafford.

GEORGE THOMASON…5.

Big show of faith to start him ahead of Williams and he really didn’t settle. Picked to disrupt the Barnsley midfield but didn’t really make a dent.

AARON MORLEY…5.

Another of Bolton’s talents who will have to look at the two play-off games and learn. Simply didn’t do himself justice.

RANDELL WILLIAMS…5.

After a reasonable show on Saturday, Williams simply couldn’t get into the game. Quality just wasn’t there when he got on the ball.

KYLE DEMPSEY…6.

A marginal improvement on Saturday, even though we know he is capable of so much more. Been a hard campaign for Dempsey and he needs to push on next term.

DION CHARLES…5.

One fleeting chance at the very start of the game and a clever pinch in the second half. Otherwise, it was a very quiet day for Bolton’s top goal-getter.

DAN NLUNDULU…5.5.

Had been pressing for this chance and showed a couple of little glimpses of why he was in the side. Not nearly enough to hurt Barnsley in the end, though.

Subs: Kachunga 5, 67 (for Thomason), Adeboyejo 5, 67 (for Nlundulu), Sheehan 73 (for Dempsey), John 73 (for R Williams), Jerome 84 (for Morley).

Not used: Dixon, MJ Williams.

Barnsley (3-5-2): Isted; Thomas, Andersen, Kitching; J Williams, Phillips, Connell, Kane, Cadden; Cole, Tedic.

Subs: Norwood 65 (for Tedic), Russell 84 (for Connell), Benson 84 (for Phillips), Thomas 87 (for Cole).

Not used: Collins, Cotter, Watters.

Referee: Michael Salisbury 5/10 – Not the reason Bolton lost the game – even though it would be handy to have someone to blame. Actually improved a lot after half time but the free kick given against Toal was a head-scratcher.

Attendance: 16,274.
