Shrewsbury boss Steve Cotterill is reportedly set to leave his position by “mutual consent”.

Cotterill guided the club to a 12th-place finish last term, although they were on the fringes of the play-offs for a large portion of the campaign before an untimely injury took its toll.

It was a significant improvement on the previous season when they finished in 18th place – 10 points above the drop zone.

But Cotterill’s two-and-a-half-year stay at New Meadow is now expected to come to an end, according to The Shrewsbury Star.

The 58-year-old had cast doubts over his future in his press conference following the 1-0 defeat at Lincoln on the final day.

Last month, the club announced that a restructure would be taking place with a new football board coming in.

Mickey Moore has since been appointed as director of football, opting to leave his role at Cheltenham after a five-year spell at Whaddon Road.

When asked about the restructure, Cotterill said: "When did you read it? That is when I read it.

“I cannot shed any light on it, that is the honest answer. Someone sent me a link, maybe I am not that important."

He added: "I do not quite know what that entails. The football season now has finished and I need to have time to take stock of all of it and maybe see my family a little bit.”

Cotterill took charge at Shrewsbury in November 2020, having previously had spells in charge at Burnley, Portsmouth and Bristol City among others.

He had a spell away from the club later that season when he was hospitalised after suffering with Covid-pneumonia.

Assistant manager Aaron Wilbraham, who scored a memorable late winner against Nottingham Forest to keep the Whites in the Championship in 2018, took charge of games while Cotterill was absent.
