Various roads in the borough will be closed next week as the Tour of Britain returns to the area for the first time in four years.

The region welcomes the first stage of the cycle race between September 3 and September 10.

The first stage, also known as the 'Grand Départ', is between Altrincham and Manchester but it takes in all of the boroughs of Greater Manchester.

In Bolton, it weaves across the border with Lancashire and there are opportunities to see some of the best cyclists from the best teams in the world.

But there will also be road closures in place to make sure the event is safe for cyclists.

The road closures will be in place from 8am September 3 until 3pm.

All vehicles not engaged in the event will be prohibited from proceeding on:

  • Ramsbottom Road from Bury Road to Lancashire borough boundary
  • Bury Road (Turton) from Ramsbottom Road to borough boundary
  • Blackburn Road - from Longworth Road to borough boundary
  • Longworth Road - from Blackburn Road to borough boundary
  • Grimeford Lane - from Blackrod Bypass to borough boundary
  • Dark Lane - for its full length
  • Little Scotland - from Dark Lane to borough boundary

These are police-controlled rolling-roadblocks, this means the race route, including junctions with access onto the route, are closed while the race passes through.

The time and length of the closures is dependent upon the speed of the race and how dispersed the riders are.
