Ian Evatt was pleased to see his depleted Wanderers side “find a way to win” against Stevenage.

Dion Charles, Jack Iredale and Josh Sheehan were all on target for the Whites, who were twice pegged back by Jamie Reid.

“People shouldn’t underestimate any team that is managed by Steve Evans,” said Evatt. “The way they ask you questions and make you defend your box is everything we expected.

“Set-plays, second balls, forward runners, it is tough to play against and takes serious energy and concentration.

“With a depleted squad and the energy we put into winning on Saturday, I am so happy for the players to find a way to win.”

Wanderers have now won back-to-back league games and are building momentum ahead of the international break.

“I said last week that the next three games weren’t necessarily about performances and being our fluid best,” Evatt continued.

“It is just about finding a way, with the group and the energy they have to put in. We have got a lack of options and chance to rotate because we haven’t got the depth we would normally have.

“But the players dug so deep. The togetherness in the group is amazing and again they found a way to keep finding a goal. It is something I am proud of.”

Iredale found himself in the thick of the action, getting a goal and an assist as well as winning the penalty for Charles’ opener.

“They are a really dangerous team from set-plays, we knew that,” the manager explained.

“But we also knew with the way they mark and set up, there were opportunities for us to create chances with some routines we have worked on.

“We got the penalty from the first one and the second one was a well-worked routine. I’m delighted we have managed to score more or less two set-plays.

“When you are not at your best and lacking a bit of energy, that is a different way to win and we found that.”
