Refereeing has been a major talking point in English football recently – and Jon Walters has commented on his controversial goal that saw Wanderers relegated from the Premier League in 2012.

The Whites drew 2-2 against the Potters on the final day as their 11-year stay in the top flight came to an end.

Mark Davis and Kevin Davies were both on target but it ultimately wasn’t enough to beat the drop, with QPR surviving by a single point.

Walters bagged a brace on the day, and there was an element of controversy surrounding both of the goals.

He appeared to knock the ball out of Adam Bogdan’s hands for the first, and the second came from the penalty spot after Peter Crouch seemed to go down easily in the box.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made the headlines on Wednesday when he called for his side’s defeat against Tottenham to be replayed after Luis Diaz saw a goal wrongly chalked off for an offside.

Walters wrote on his official X page: “I scored a goal in the last game of the season in 2012 against Bolton.

“It relegated Bolton and they haven’t returned to the PL since. It was a clear foul on Adam Bogdan! I think a replay is the right thing to do.”

Kevin Davies gave a cheeky response, writing: “You dirty git!” and Paddy McGuiness also weighed in, joking: “No need!”

We asked supporters which Bolton game they would pick from over the years if one could be replayed, and Stoke was a popular choice.

One fan wrote: “Farcical to allow the Walters goal. Arguably, if not certainly, it would have prolonged our top flight status”.

Another added: “That year could have been a catalyst in the future, who knows?”

Gerry Taggart’s ‘goal that never was’ against Everton in 1997 also got plenty of mentions. It saw the Whites relegated on goal difference, with the Toffees surviving.
