Sam Allardyce has refused to rule out a return to management following his brief stint at Leeds United.

The former Bolton boss took charge of the final four games at Elland Road last season. He has built a reputation for helping sides beat the drop but was unable to keep the Yorkshire club in the Premier League on this occasion.

Big Sam was asked about whether he would be interested in the vacant Rangers job. The Scottish outfit are searching for a new boss after parting ways with Michael Beale.

Rangers currently sit third in the table, seven points behind leaders Celtic, after losing three of their opening seven league fixtures.

Allardyce says it would be an “honour” to be approached by the club after a lengthy career in England.

"If they came and asked me and talked to me, it would be an honour at Rangers,” he said. “Speaking to Alex McLeish and Fergie (Sir Alex Ferguson) about it, it’s an unbelievable football club.

"Not that I am actively promoting myself for the job, but clearly it has not gone well (for Michael Beale). He’s only been in the job for two minutes.”

In response to Big Sam’s comments, former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson insisted the 68-year-old’s experience would have a positive impact at Ibrox.

“One came to mind and I saw him do an interview, Sam Allardyce,” he told Go Radio.

“I know he is a bit older but he can get a team organised. He knows how to manage and he has brilliant experience.

“I can understand the reasoning behind that, so it will be interesting to see what route they go down.”

Kevin Muscat emerged as the early favourite for the role, having spent time at Rangers during his playing career. Frank Lampard has also been linked with the job following spells at Everton and Chelsea.
