Daisy Hill suffered a frustrating afternoon at the Plumb Factory Stadium on Saturday, with a goal from Bacup Borough substitute Toby Wright six minutes from time sealing a 3-2 win for the visitors in their North West Counties League First Division North clash.

Daisy twice took the lead through goals from Sam Twist but after Bacup drew level for the second time with 15 minutes remaining, Wright’s late goal dashed hopes of collecting at least a point.

Daisy manager Lee Hill felt afterwards his side deserved to have taken something from the game.

“It wasn’t a bad performance from us, and to be honest I’m a bit upset about how it all worked out,” said Hill. “We had opportunities at times, but failed to manage the game and be decisive at the right moments and in the right areas.

“I said to the players before the game I felt it was going to be very evenly matched, and that’s how it turned out.

“Both teams are similar in the way the play and the way they approach the games, so it was always going to come down to who wanted it a bit more, and maybe a little bit of good fortune.

“I think in the first half we edged it and deserved to be ahead at half time, in the second half they probably did, and got a little bit of luck which was misfortune on our side.

“We said during the second-half water break we were overplaying a bit at times, making silly mistakes and being a bit naïve, and we were punished in the end.

“Credit to their lad (Toby Wright), he took his goal really well, although he probably shouldn’t have been allowed to be in that position anyway, we shouldn’t have let that happen.”

The first half took a while to spark into life, but Daisy took the lead halfway through when Jake O’Brien’s inswinging corner from the right was met with a glancing header from Twist, which hit the underside of the bar on its way into the back of the net.

Bacup levelled the scores just after the hour, when Alex Mellor found space down the right and squared the ball into the six-yard box for Byrne to slot home from close range.

But Daisy hit back in dramatic fashion and took the lead straight from the kick off, with a neat through ball from Brown sending Twist through on goal, and the front man sidestepped a challenge before burying a shot in to the bottom corner.

However, with 16 minutes remaining, Bacup were level once more, and it was a moment to forget for Daisy defender James Phillips, who stooped low to clear a cross with a diving header and only succeeded in sending the ball past Newns into the back of his own net.

With both sides pushing forward looking for a winner, Daisy were caught on the counter attack with six minutes left, and a ball from Morris found Bacup substitute Wright in space wide on the right.

The Bacup striker, who scored the only goal of the game when the sides last met at Daisy Hill back in March, delivered a repeat performance when he advanced into the box and rifled a shot across Newns into the far corner.

A disappointing afternoon for the hosts was rounded off when O’Brien was harshly shown a straight red card for a challenge on Wright on the edge of the box, with the referee ruling that O’Brien had clipped the Bacup man before getting a foot on the ball to clear.

Daisy host Bacup Borough again tonight, this time in the Edward Case Cup first round (7.45pm).
