Former Wanderers man Matt Taylor is embracing the pressure of management several months into his latest role.

Taylor, who spent three-and-a-half-years at Bolton as a player, took charge at Shrewsbury over the summer following Steve Cotterill’s departure.

Salop had a promising start to the campaign, winning three of their opening five matches in League One.

However, Taylor’s side went on a six-game winless run prior to Saturday’s 1-0 victory against Northampton. Daniel Udoh struck a dramatic late winner against the Cobblers.

Shrewsbury currently sit 19th in the table – five points above the drop zone ahead of Saturday’s trip to Cambridge.

Taylor admits the past few weeks have been challenging but insists the pressure should fall onto his shoulders rather than his players.

“When results do not go your way that brings pressure, you are always going to get pressure in football,” he told Shropshire Star.

“My job is to accept that pressure and deal with it and try to remove it as much as I can for the players. That is my role, so let me take it all so the players can be free and feel as fresh as they can.

“They are the lucky ones who get to go out there and perform. If we can continue to perform with energy like we did at the weekend, we will be okay this year.

“They have suffered a lot and they have not got their just rewards for their performances. I told them after the game how happy I was for them as a group of men.”

Taylor is set to come up against his former club on Tuesday, November 7 when Wanderers head to New Meadow (7.45pm).

The fixture was initially scheduled for Saturday, September 9 but was postponed due to international call-ups.
