Former Wanderers man Steve Thompson has left his role at Oldham Athletic, the club has confirmed.

Thompson was placed in interim charge at his hometown club last month following David Unsworth’s sacking.

The 58-year-old oversaw three wins and three draws during his six-game spell in charge, guiding the club to within three points of a play-off spot. The victories came against York City, Oxford City and Kidderminster Harriers.

However, he has now departed Boundary Park along with Neil Redfearn as the search for Unsworth’s successor continues.

"Steve Thompson and Neil Redfearn have left their position as the interim management team ahead of the club making its next appointment," read an official statement.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Steve and Neil for their work in taking charge of the first team during recent weeks.

"Academy manager Paul Murray will oversee training ahead of Saturday's Emirates FA Cup tie against Altrincham. An announcement in relation to the managerial position will be made in due course."

Thompson made 422 appearances for Bolton after coming through the youth ranks in the early eighties, scoring 53 goals.

Since retiring in 2002 he has amassed an extensive coaching career with the likes of Preston North End, Huddersfield Town, Blackpool and Leeds United.

Thompson arrived at Oldham last November, taking up the head of recruitment role and playing a key role in a number of signings.

The Boundary Park club were relegated from League Two in 2022, becoming the first side ex-Premier League side to drop out of the Football League.

They finished 12th in the National League last season, enduring a difficult first half of the campaign before putting a run of results together.
