WANDERERS have confirmed that their League One game against Cambridge United, scheduled for November 18, has been postponed for international call-ups.

Ian Evatt’s side face a free weekend for the third month in a row with the likes of Josh Sheehan (Wales), Eoin Toal and Dion Charles (both Northern Ireland) set to play for their country.

Zac Ashworth (Wales Under-21s) and Conor Carty (Ireland Under-21s) were also in action during the last international break.

Wanderers say there will be an announcement in due course about the rescheduled game – but the near 400-mile round trip will most likely now take place in midweek.

Evatt called last month for the EFL to make postponements mandatory across the division during an international break, to avoid the league table becoming ‘skewed’ against those clubs who cannot play fixtures.

Currently, a game is automatically called off if three or more internationals – including Under-21s – are given notification that they will be called up by their country.

Evatt told The Bolton News earlier this month: “I think we need to do something better. For me, I don’t like ‘some’ fixtures taking place, I don’t think that is right.

“We need to cancel all the games when the majority are being called off for internationals and then use the spare Tuesdays through the season. Or use space at the end of the season?

“There has to be a better way that what we are doing at the moment because even 11 games in, October, and they are already two games ahead of us. I don’t think that is necessarily the right thing.”

Cambridge United issued the following statement this morning, confirming that the call-ups had only affected Bolton.

“Cambridge United's home Sky Bet League fixture against Bolton Wanderers has been postponed due to international call-ups for the visiting side,” it read.

“The fixture, originally scheduled to take place on Saturday 18 November, will be rearranged for a future date.

“Tickets already purchased for the match will remain eligible for the rescheduled fixture, but refunds can be requested for those who cannot make the new date, by emailing info@cambridgeunited.com.”
