WANDERERS booked their place in the FA Cup second round with a minimum of fuss with a 4-0 victory against non-league Solihull Moors.

The result was never really in any serious doubt from the moment Ricardo Santos headed home Aaron Morley’s corner in a first half the Whites had completely dominated.

Paris Maghoma, Will Forrester and Dion Charles added some emphasis after the break – Charles even missing a penalty in what was an action-packed 20-minute cameo from the bench.

Moors worked hard to give their 400-or-so travelling fans something to cheer but went home completely empty-handed, and even saw skipper Jamey Osbourne sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

Wanderers made five changes to the side that beat Charlton last time out, bringing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Paris Maghoma, Dan Nlundulu, Jack Iredale and Will Forrester back into the starting line-up.

There were 48 places separating the two sides in the Football League pyramid and, save for a couple of aerial scuffles with target man Mark Beck, the class gap told. Bolton led 1-0 at half time thanks to a header from Santos – but they created enough chances to have been much further ahead.

Maghoma hit the bar with a curling shot from the edge of the box, Gethin Jones unable to steer the rebound into the net, and Dan Nlundulu also brought a good save out of Tommy Simkin in the visitors’ goal with a shot on the turn.

Brentford loanee Maghoma looked to be enjoying himself, finding gaps all over the pitch. He too was denied by a smart stop from Simkin after racing on to a long ball from Santos, and then turned provider with a deep cross for Jones, whose header was also tipped over the top by the Moors’ keeper.

Any nervousness was settled a few minutes into the second half when Bodvarsson’s shot was blocked on the line, Maghoma following up with a lovely spin and finish.

To their credit, Moors refused to go quietly. Richard Stearman and sub Jack Stevens tested Nathan Baxter and had the National League men got something back at that point, there might have been a bit more spice to the cup tie.

Instead, Bolton continued to churn out chances. Joseph Newton denied sub Carlos Mendes Gomes a tap in with a brilliant clearance on the line, Simkin tipped a snap shot from Morley around the post and then denied Maghoma his second of the game.

Moors finally caved, undone by another relatively simple corner from Aaron Morley headed home with aplomb by Forrester for his first Bolton goal.

Given the commanding nature of Bolton’s lead it was almost a surprise to see Dion Charles come on as a substitute with 20 minutes to go. Smelling a chance to extend his 10 goals already this season, the Northern Ireland international nearly scored with his first touch.

He will be disappointed, too, that after fellow sub Luke Mattheson did superbly to win a penalty with 10 minutes remaining – his quick feet drawing a rash challenge from Jamey Osbourne – his effort from the spot was pushed away by the excellent Simkin.

That seemed to fire him up, however, and a few minutes from the end he lashed in the fourth goal of the day after some good work from Cameron Jerome.

Charles should have had a second chance to score from the spot – ref Scott Simpson incredibly turning down Bolton’s appeals after Jerome and Mendes Gomes were felled in the last few moments of the game.

There was still time for a bit of late drama, as Moors skipper Osbourne was sent off for a late challenge on Williams. His manager, Andy Whing, also got booked for his protests.
